Formula Arguments

As you start working with more complex functions in Excel that involve multiple arguments, you might forget the order of the arguments or which arguments to include.

You could instead enter the formula via the Insert Formula dialog box (click on the fx button in the formula bar) or via the Insert menu and then Formula.

However, suppose you started typing a formula and you would rather not have to bail out and go back to the Insert Formula dialog box.

There is a quick way.  Another one of those Excel tricks that aren't well known.

Suppose you were starting a sumif formula.

=Sumif(

Then you forget, was it the criteria range that came first, or the sum range or the critieria or something else.

Rather than stop the formula midstream, after you have typed in the function name, click Ctrl, Shift and A together.

You will then see the arguments appear, so you have what you need to know to finish the formula.

Another way to do this might be (depending on your version of Excel) is to just enter the left parenthesis after the function name.  You might also see the arguments appear.
